About this award
The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources will receive $900,000 through a Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 to construct predator-proof fences to protect rare and endangered tree-snail populations on the Hawaiian islands. The award, made under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation program (CFDA 15.657), will support the Division of Forestry and Wildlife in establishing and safeguarding existing populations of the Achatinella tree-snail species endemic to the Northern Koolau Mountains on Oahu, as well as Partulina, Perdicella, and Newcombia tree-snail species found on the islands of Maui Nui. The project aims to address drastic range reductions and population declines largely due to introduced predators and climate change over the five-year period from November 1, 2022 through October 31, 2027.
Description
Rare and endangered snail tree-snail species in the genus achatinella, endemic to the northern koolau mountains on oahu, and related species in the genera partulina, perdicella, and newcombia, found on the islands of maui NUI, have experienced drastic range reductions and populations declines due largely to introduced predators and climate change. To date the most effective way to conserve tree-snail species is to reestablish and protect existing populations in the wild with predator-proof fencing. Here the division of forestry and wildlife proposes to construct predator-proof fences at priority sites on oahu and on the islands of maui NUI to protect rare and endangered snail populations.
