Description
The EEL river of northern indiana is a 5TH order stream with a watershed area of 827 square miles the river is approximately 100 miles in length and historically had 14 low head dams by 2012, seven of the 14 dams remained through partnerships with the ohio river basin fish habitat partnership, national fish passage program, and national fish habitat partnership, four of these low head dams have been removed and we have installed a prototype fish passageway around the stockdale mill DAM RM 32 that could not be removed over 1,100 stream miles have been reconnected through these partnerships fish indices improved a minimum of 30 after removal of each of the four dams, and we documented an increase in smallmouth bass nesting at each removal site one year after the dams were removed in 2020, funding was secured to remove the most downstream two dams in the EEL river at the city of logansport river mile 1 removal of these dams occured in the fall of 2021 following removal, the entire EEL river basin is reconnected for fish passage over 1,200 stream miles with the wabash river the goal of this proposal and novel opportunity is to describe recolonization of and use of historic habitat by fish that have not had access to the EEL basin for over 100 years we propose to document the recolonization response of native fishes by electrofishing six mainstem and 20 tributary historic sample sites across the basin we also propose to use the existing biomark passive integrated transponders tag antenna system along with trap netting at the stockdale mill DAM fish passageway
