Description
A partnership focused on restoring aquatic organism passage AOP for brook trout and other coldwater species in the NB oconto river near wabeno, WI identified three remnant logging dams as barriers to fish passage in 2016 and 2017 since that time, trout unlimited TU has worked with the forest county potawatomi community fcpc , wisconsin DNR, US forest service chequamegon nicolet national forest, forest county, the town of wabeno, professional consultants, and other partners to remove two of the three dams this is the third and final of three remnant logging dams in this stretch of of the NB oconto river the DAM creates a 2 8 FT vertical drop in water surface and constricts the stream creating velocities in excess of 3 7 FT S consultants analyzing impacts of the DAM estimate that flood impacts to the area would be increased due to the DAM constricting the stream and degrading ecosystem services that would help mitigate potential flood damage removing the DAM will involve pulling the existing structure from the stream bed and removing the abutments that are constricting the channel a reference reach, and upstream and downstream conditions, will be used to restore the channel grade where the DAM has impacted the stream and to match streak bank slopes to existing reference conditions restoring AOP will result in the reconnection of at least 5 miles of classified trout stream habitat this project is a key component of the NB oconto river restoration collaboration started by the fcpc is an excellent example of how tribal, public, and private resources can be effectively leveraged to improve aquatic habitat and recreational opportunities funding this project proposal will help to continue those efforts
