Description
We will determine the minimum number of individuals, SEX ratio, and genetic diversity of the population in the okanogan lynx management zone (LMZ; lewis 2016), and assess connectivity between individuals inhabiting western washington and southern british columbia (BC). This assessment will identify whether the population is experiencing negative genetic effects of small size or lack of connectivity, identify currently occupied lynx habitat, and determine key areas to target forest resilience management actions that restore and maintain habitat for lynx and their key prey. This project will help US understand the current population status of a carnivore of significant management concern that faces substantial threats of extirpation from widespreadloss and fragmentation of its remaining habitat as a result of climate change. This proposed project will meet the USFWS washington ecological services' strategic plan's objectives by filling data gaps to restore and conserve the population of canada lynx and providing a much needed genetic assessment of a federally threatened and state endangered species in washington; as well as surveying for cascade red FOX, a washington candidatespecies.
