Description

Site one (wdfw site ID 127S0362) is located at road mile 0.16 on schafer boom road and stream mile 0.42 (LAT/long 46.9801/-123.56473). Prior to the planned restoration, the crossing was rated as being 33 percent passable for salmonids due to RIP RAP at the culvert outlet that created a large scour pool. Additionally, the stream has a bankfull width of 20 feet but the barrier culvert is only 3 feet in diameter, is not countersunk, and has a slope of 2.2 percent, creating flows through the pipe that are too fast for fish to swim through to get upstream. A correction to this barrier culvert was designed and permitted under a grant from the washington state salmon recovery funding board (grant 16-1327). Funds from this agreement will be used for construction to remove the current barrier culvert and RIP RAP and replace IT with a structure that allows all life forms and stages of aquatic life access to critical upstream habitat. Site two (wdfw site ID 127S0361) is located at road mile 0.10 on schafer boom road and stream mile 0.55 (LAT/long 46.98121/-123.56489). High water velocities from the undersized culvert (3 feet wide) create a 67 percent passable barrier, and funding from this agreement will be used to design and permit a fish barrier correction at site two for which construction funds will be sought in future grants. The overall goal is to improve fish passage to 10.21 miles of high quality upstream habitat for five species of salmonids: chinook, coho and chum salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout.
