Description

Efforts focus on top priority recovery actions in the MYLF recovery plan and implementation strategy (2, 3) that directly address downlisting criteria (e.g., increasing numbers of free-living MYLF; disease mitigation). Proposed work specifically focuses on (1) captive propagation of larger numbers of MYLF annually, (2) population augmentation and reestablishment of MYLF, and (3) characterizing and addressing the impacts of the amphibian chytrid fungus. In doing so the proposed activities will also enhance reproductive fitness, reintroduction strategies, and post-release monitoring. The activities explicitly work towards increasing representation (preserving and enhancing genetic diversity in captive populations), redundancy (reintroducing MYLF at new sites), and resilience (examining strategies for chytrid mitigation, climate change/drought mitigation (e.g. lake releases), and methods for increasing survival of reintroduced frogs). The methods used in this proposal to produce, head-start, and reintroduce frogs have been implemented successfully in the past by our program; the proposed work on chytrid is based off of methods used for northern YLF populations. This project is a collaborative effort lead by the SAN diego ZOO wildlife alliance in partnership with the LOS angeles ZOO, omaha's henry doorly ZOO and aquarium, the aquarium of the pacific, the santa ANA ZOO, the big bear alpine ZOO, birch aquarium at scripps institution of oceanography, U.S. Fish and wildlife service, california department of fish and wildlife, the U.S. Geological survey, and the U.S. Forest service
