The American Cast Iron Pipe Company (AMERICAN) was awarded a $75,000,000 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Clean Energy Demonstrations program (CFDA 81.255) to retrofit its Birmingham, Alabama facility. The project will install four 35-MT 20.8-MW electric induction melting furnaces and three 165-MT 2-MW electric induction holding furnaces to produce ductile iron pipe (DIP) without using foundry coke. This will demonstrate at least a 50% reduction in carbon intensity for the overall facility and a 90% reduction for the melting/holding process compared to 2022 baseline levels. The project will also support labor upskilling, create an estimated 80 new permanent jobs, and implement community engagement initiatives to ensure equitable benefits to surrounding disadvantaged communities. The project period runs from the award date of November 20, 2024 through the ultimate completion date of April 30, 2030.
