The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $57,957,022 Cooperative Agreement under the Clean Energy Demonstrations program (CFDA 81.255) to Nreca Research, a non-profit organization, to create a consortium of rural electric cooperatives and deploy microgrids (including solar PV, battery storage, and distribution upgrades) across seven rural communities in California, North Carolina, Minnesota, Arizona, Tennessee, and Montana. The goal is to demonstrate region-specific energy systems that improve energy access, enhance resilience, and increase renewable energy capacity at the community level. The project, running from October 2024 to September 2029, aims to enable rural utilities to collectively pursue federal funding, address capacity constraints, and share best practices. As part of the community benefits plan, the consortium members with collective bargaining agreements anticipate creating an estimated 85 full-time temporary jobs. Nreca Research has also secured sub-awards from institutions like the University of Pittsburgh and Electric Power Research Institute to contribute its expertise to various energy-related research and development efforts.
