The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $50,000,000 Cooperative Agreement under the Clean Energy Demonstrations program (CFDA 81.255) to Westinghouse Electric Company LLC to design, build, and deploy a Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) system with a capacity to discharge at least 50 MW of continuous output for 24 hours at the Healy Power Plant in Alaska. This project, known as the POLAR Project, aims to enhance grid resiliency and stability, reduce the regional carbon footprint, and improve the reliability of electricity in Alaska's Railbelt region, while demonstrating the DOE's support of renewable energy solutions. Westinghouse Electric Company LLC is collaborating with technology provider Echogen Power Systems and construction partner Houston Contracting Company to deliver this PTES system.
