Description

Purpose
The purpose of this award is to integrate standards and standardization content into the manufacturing and mechanical engineering curriculum with a focus on materials processing and machine design for undergraduate students in freshman through senior years.
Activities
Nine modules will be developed and integrated into coursework at two universities. This will include three beginner-, three intermediate-, and three advanced-level modules that contain lectures, hands-on labs, and projects. Each module will align with relevant industry standards. The content will be taught in 12 courses.
Expected outcomes
Students will learn about the impact and nature of standards and standardization so that they enter the workforce or continue their academic studies with a strong understanding and appreciation for the value and benefits of standards and standardization. The awardee will deepen their experience and expertise on the value and impact of standards, standardization, and standards development and will strengthen their program offerings, and as a result, students will be better-qualified to understand, apply, and effectively contribute to standards development activities throughout their professional lives. The proposed work complements NIST's efforts to help create a more standards-savvy workforce. Integrating standards education into undergraduate and graduate programs helps build an early pipeline for cultivating future leaders in standardization.
Intended beneficiaries
Undergraduate students who are taught the content of the curriculum.
Subrecipient activities
The recipient plans to subaward funds to mercer university to develop some of the course materials, assess learning outcomes, and support efforts for the modules to be replicated by other U.S. Colleges and universities.
