About this award

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded a $399,978.52 cooperative agreement to Tiami LLC, a minority-owned small business, under the Science, Technology, Business and/or Education Outreach program (CFDA 11.620). The purpose of this award is for Tiami to improve first responder situational awareness in various types of building structures, including underground areas, where GPS coverage is unavailable. Tiami plans to prototype a portable digital television (DTV) positioning receiver and demonstrate the use of over-the-air DTV ATSC 3.0 broadcast transmissions from multiple stations to infer the receiver's position during outdoor testing. The expected outcome is a compact, robust, and cost-effective positioning solution that requires minimal user training and can be used wherever digital TV stations are in coverage, reducing the need for emergency management communities to invest in new transmitters or infrastructure.
