About this award
Advent Diamond, Inc. was awarded a $400,000 cooperative agreement from the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the Science, Technology, Business and/or Education Outreach federal grant program (CFDA 11.620) to develop phosphorus-doped diamond for quantum sensor applications. Advent Diamond will conduct a feasibility study during Phase I to fabricate doped diamond epiwafer samples, demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating nitrogen-vacancy centers in the epiwafers, and perform characterization studies. This will determine the feasibility of customizing quantum-quality phosphorus-doped diamond grown via chemical vapor deposition for quantum sensor applications. Arizona State University will collaborate on sample design and the Larta Institute will provide technical and business assistance. The award period is from October 1, 2022 to May 15, 2023.
Description
- Activities
- During phase i, advent diamond will conduct a feasibility study that includes fabricating doped diamond epiwafer samples, demonstrating feasibility of fabricating NV centers in the epiwafers, and performing characterization studies; this will determine the feasibility of the proposed approach of growing quantum-quality phosphorous-doped diamond via chemical vapor deposition and customizing such materials for quantum sensor applications.
- Expected outcomes
- In phase i, advent diamond plans to share preliminary results with magnetometry and quantum research groups; identify potential research and commercialization partners; and share progress with specific subject matter experts. This will promote commercialization efforts by presenting test results and instrument-scale benefits to the research and development community.
- Intended beneficiaries
- The economic benefits of this project represents a major advancement in doped diamond structures. There are many potential mass markets for this technology, including global positioning systems (GPS), and medical imaging. Long-term, the development of quantum technologies can lead to next-generation telecommunications, computing, and security technologies. Semiconducting and quantum diamond technology, when fully developed, have the potential to touch nearly every sector of the U.S. Economy.
- Subrecipient activities
- Advent diamond has selected the following companies to provide subcontract and consulting services:- arizona state university (ASU) plans to collaborate with diamond advent in the area of sample design.- larta institute plans to provide technical and business assistance (taba)
