Description
- Activities
- The project team will demonstrate the feasibility of the N95-level nonwoven filter material to meet NIOSH specifications 42 CFR part 84 (respiratory protective devices); and manufacture respiratory personal protective equipment (rppe) prototypes using a linear nonwoven additive manufacture machine that meets food and drug administration (FDA) requirements.
- Expected outcomes
- The project will enable new nonwoven fiber materials and designs and support prototype and high-volume fabrication of innovative respiratory personal protective equipment (rppes). The project outcomes will remove a key barrier in respiratory personal protective equipment nonwoven production by creating a modular system, reducing the need for specialized production equipment that cannot be easily scaled.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Healthcare workers and the general public will benefit from readily available and high-quality next-generation surgical masks and flat N95 respirators that are more breathable. The modular and deployable manufacturing system will enable the local distributed production to reduce response-to-need time and allow the state government and regional healthcare system to rapidly establish production capability in crisis situations. Local residents will benefit from the workforce development component of this project on the manufacturing pilot line. Small businesses will benefit from workers skilled in working with advanced nonwoven material and rppe manufacturing.
- Subrecipient activities
- The recipient plans to subaward funds to assist with program management, design of additive manufacturing head, research into the additive manufacturing of nonwoven materials, workforce training modules, and expertise of polymer and melt-blown machines and processes.
