Description

Awards issued prior to january 20, 2025, were funded under previous administrations and may not reflect the priorities and policies of the current administration.** in collaboration with our project partners, including haven's harvest, the center for ecotechnology (CET), bigbelly, town green district, university towers, new haven public schools, and brightfeeds, the city of new haven will pilot several innovative composting and food waste reduction strategies. CET will provide customized recommendations to apartment complexes such as university towers, select hotels and businesses in the town green district, and several K-12 schools to establish sustainable and long-lasting solutions for managing wasted food. Haven's harvest, a local food recovery organization, will expand its capacity to recover edible surplus, contributing to increased food recovery in the city. Additionally, we will leverage the use of bigbelly drop-off bins at apartment complexes and publicly accessible locations in the town green district to facilitate convenient composting. Brightfeeds has committed to market and support a new route to collect food scraps and conver them to animal feed: this route will be one of the proposed solutions in center for ecotechnology's customized recommendations to hotels, food-permitted businesses, and K-12 schools. Through this collaborative approach and strategic partnerships, new haven aims to overcome cost barriers, develop the necessary infrastructure, and provide targeted support to businesses and organizations. By doing so, new haven aims to increase the city's capacity for wasted food diversion, particularly donation, animal feed production, and composting, and foster a more sustainable and resilient community.
