IT'S BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND SHAMEFUL GIVEN THAT ONE IN THREE RHODE ISLAND FAMILIES ARE FOOD INSECURE.THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING GET FOOD SMART, NORTH PROVIDENCE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERTING, RECOVERING AND REDUCING FOOD WASTE. THEY SEE THAT WE CAN CONSERVE RESOURCES FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS, REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, HELP BUSINESSES AND CONSUMERS SAVE MONEY, AND PROVIDE ACCESS TO FOOD FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT. BUILDING ON THE FAMILIAR CONCEPT OF REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, THIS APPROACH AIMS TO ENSURE THAT FOOD IS USED TO FEED PEOPLE AND TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS ASSOCIATED WITH WASTED FOOD.OVER 70% OF YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCE ECO ANXIETY, A CONSTANT CONCERN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ACTIVITY THAT REDUCES GREENHOUSE GASES AND IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT. ULTIMATELY IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO IGNITE A YOUTH MOVEMENT TO FAST TRACK SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
