About this award
This Cooperative Agreement award, provided by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) under the OVW Technical Assistance Initiative (CFDA 16.526), will enable Ujima: The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community to deliver training and technical assistance to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that are current or potential grantees of OVW's Campus Program. The $400,000 award will fund culturally specific and trauma-informed strategies to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on HBCU campuses over a 24-month project period from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026. Key activities will include in-person and virtual trainings, topical webinars, on-site technical assistance visits, quarterly cohort calls, and the development of relevant fact sheets and culturally appropriate products to support HBCUs in addressing gender-based violence.
Description
The office on violence against women (OVW) training and technical assistance (TA) initiative provides OVW grantees and subgrantees with the expertise and support they need to develop and implement successful state, local, tribal, and campus projects; increase victim safety; and bolster offender accountability. Through cooperative agreements, OVW supports educational initiatives, conferences, peer-to-peer consultations, and targeted assistance that allow current and potential grantees and subgrantees to learn from experts and one another about how to overcome obstacles and incorporate promising practices in their efforts to address violence against women. In addition, OVW is focused on building the capacity of the criminal and civil justice systems and victim service providers to respond effectively to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking and to foster partnerships between organizations that have not traditionally worked together to address violence against women. With FY 2024 TA initiative funding, UJIMA: the national center on violence against women in the black community (UJIMA) will continue to deliver training and technical assistance (TA) to historically black colleges and universities (HBCUS) that are grantees or potential grantees of the grants to reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus (campus program). This project will focus on culturally specific and trauma informed strategies/approaches to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking (collectively, gender-based violence or GBV) on campus. Over the course of the project period, UJIMA will convene in-person and virtual trainings, conduct topical webinars on emerging issues relevant to HBCUS, conduct onsite TA visits, conduct check in and quarterly institution specific cohort calls, participate in monthly TA provider conference calls and annual planning meetings, collaborate with the campus program TA team, host annual steering committee meetings, develop fact sheets relevant to HBCUS, develop culturally relevant products to support HBCUS in addressing GBV, and provide feedback on strategic plans submitted by new and continuation grantees. This project supports FY 2024 TA initiative purpose area 03: training and technical assistance to historically black colleges and universities (HBCUS). The timing for performance of this award is 24 months. This award is a continuation of 15JOVW-21-GK-02199-camp.
