This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract awarded by the NASA Shared Services Center to Applied Material Systems Engineering, Inc. (AMS Engineering), a minority-owned small business. The contract, valued at $755,000.00, is for the development and validation of an affordable, conductive thermal control material system (TCMS) for space applications. The effort focuses on two key areas: the development of intercalated boron nitride nanostructures, and the synthesis and...
NASA awarded a $124,995.00 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT), a manufacturer of thermal management solutions located in Neffsville, Pennsylvania. ACT is developing a novel vapor-pressure-driven variable view factor radiator as a thermal control system component for spacecraft. This technology is intended to maintain a constant environment temperature for crewed vehicles across a wide range of external thermal environments,...
This is a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Advanced Cooling Technologies Inc. (ACT), a small business manufacturer of thermal management solutions. The $910,482.00 firm-fixed-price contract has a completion date of December 14, 2025. ACT will perform research and development work on advanced thermal control technologies, such as heat pipes for spacecraft and cooling systems for high-performance...
This is a $124,923 Phase I SBIR contract awarded by NASA to Quest Thermal Group, LLC, a small business based in Arvada, Colorado. The contract is for the development of a novel Variable Conductance Radiator (VCR) that can provide highly variable heat rejection capabilities for spacecraft. This aligns with NASA's need for advanced thermal control technologies to support future space missions beyond low-Earth orbit, where thermal environments and vehicle heat loads can vary significantly. The...
This is a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase II contract awarded by NASA to Triton Systems, Inc., a global product development and venturing company based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The contract, valued at $749,975, is for the development of an innovative switchable emissivity surface film for thermal management in NASA missions, from Earth orbit CubeSats to deep space. The film has no moving parts, is composed of stable solid-state materials, and can switch between low and...

THIS EFFORT, ENTITLED "EHD-BASED VARIABLE CONDUCTANCE THERMAL INTERFACE MATERIAL (VCTIM)", IS THE RESULT OF A PROPOSAL SUBMITTED BY BOEING SATELLITE SYSTEMS, INC. FOR AWARD UNDER THE NASA HEADQUARTERS OFFICE OF CHIEF TECHNOLOGIST BROAD AGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT (BAA) NNH11ZUA001K, ENTITLED "UNIQUE & INNOVATIVE SPACE TECHNOLOGY". THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION'S SPACE TECHNOLOGY GAME CHANGING TECHNOLOGY (GCT) DIVISION FOCUSES ON DEVELOPING RADICALLY NEW APPROACHES TO THE AGENCY'S FUTURE SPACE MISSIONS AND THE NATION'S SIGNIFICANT AEROSPACE NEEDS. SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTS OF GCT WILL PROVIDE OR LEAD TO REVOLUTIONARY ADVANCES IN CAPABILITY. THIS PROJECT IS FOCUSED ON NASA TECHNICAL AREA TA14 THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. UNDER THIS EFFORT, BOEING WILL DEVELOP A NEW CLASS OF ADAPTIVE NANOTHERMAL INTERFACE MATERIAL UTILIZING FIELD-DRIVEN ELECTROHYDRODYNAMIC (EHD) NANOFLUIDS, WHOSE THERMAL RESISTANCE CAN BE VARIED ON DEMAND RESULTING IN THE VARIABLE CONDUCTANCE THERMAL INTERFACE MATERIAL (VCTIM). BOEING'S INNOVATIVE DESIGN RELIES ON AN EHD-DRIVEN HIGH HEAT CAPACITY NANOPARTICLE FLUID THAT ACTIVELY AND RAPIDLY TRANSFERS HEAT FROM SOURCE-TO-SINK. THE RESULTS OF THIS EFFORT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE HIGH AND LOW END THERMAL RESISTANCES OF VCTIM WITH FOUR NANOFLUIDS THAT INCLUDE ALUMINUM NITRIDE (ALN), CUBIC BORON NITRIDE (CBN), BARIUM STRONTIUM TITANATE (BST), AND DODECANOIC ACID. THE GOAL IS TO TEST SAMPLES THAT COVER THE REALM OF PARAMETERS FROM SMALLER AND LOW DENSITY FAST MOVING PARTICLES TO LARGER AND HIGH DENSITY SLOWLY MOVING PARTICLES. UNDER THIS EFFORT, THE CONTRACTOR WILL DEVELOP VCTIM WITH AN EHD-DRIVEN HEAT TRANSFER FLUID AND A DEVICE MOUNT, DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THERMAL RESISTANCE OF
