Description
The office of inspector general has a requirement for 27 remington brand model 870P shotguns to replace existing shotgun inventory, certified armor and combat training and protocol, maintenance, and parts. The planned purchase of 27 shotguns will bring the office s total to 52. Agents carry shotguns when conducting high-risk arrest and search warrant operations, which is standard practice for law enforcement. The firearms are used for training during the ten-week basic criminal investigator training course at the U.S. Department of homeland security s federal law enforcement training center (fletc) in glynco, georgia. Special agents receive training on and must qualify with the law enforcement handgun, shotgun, and rifle. The only model shotgun used by the fletc during basic training is the remington arms model 870 (remington 870). The remington 870, and its variants such as 870P, is the predominant shotgun issued and used by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. For most special agents of the OIG, the remington 870 is the only shotgun they have ever operated and are familiar with. OIG special agents must qualify with the remington 870 shotgun no less than twice per year. The OIG firearms instructors, as remington 870 armorers, keep an inventory of parts that occasionally need replacement due to wear or breakage. To add an additional make and model shotgun to the OIG inventory would require OIG to purchase maintenance parts for those shotguns and needlessly increasing the cost for the OIG.
