NASA Langley Research Center awarded a $525,749 firm fixed price purchase order to COI Ceramics, Inc., a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Corporation, to deliver 100 kilograms of Hi-Nicalon silicon carbide 1800 denier fiber tow. The fiber tow will be used to support NASA's flexible thermal protection system development efforts for atmospheric entry vehicles as part of the agency's High Density Ablator project. Over the past eight years, NASA has extensively tested Hi-Nicalon fiber and determined it is uniquely qualified to meet the extreme thermal and manufacturing demands for this application. The award is not set aside and is being issued on a sole source basis due to NASA's substantial past investment in qualifying this fiber and the lack of any other commercially available alternative that could meet requirements without significant additional research investment. Performance will occur in San Diego, California over a five month period concluding in mid-January 2021.
