About this award

This is a delivery order contract awarded by the Goddard Space Flight Center, a civilian agency within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to The Aerospace Corporation, a non-profit federally funded research and development center (FFRDC). The contract, valued at $1,291,368.38, supports NASA's independent assessment of the Search and Rescue/Global Positioning System (SAR/GPS) system, which is a component of the international COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue system. The contractor will provide management, coordination, and systems engineering support for the assessment, including on-site monitoring and independent evaluation of the SAR/GPS system. The contract has no set-aside designation and is a cost-plus-fixed-fee type. This work aligns with NASA's broader efforts to ensure mission assurance for the SAR/GPS capability, which will be hosted on future GPS IIIB and GPS IIIC satellites.

Each SAR-equipped GPS iiib and GPS iiic satellite will receive alert signals from aircraft-based emergency locator transmitters (ELTS), maritime emergency position-indicating radio beacons (EPIRBS), or terrestrial personal locator beacons (PLBS), and will relay them to specialized ground stations for location determination and dissemination to rescue personnel. The national aeronautics and space administration (NASA) is conducting an independent assessment of the SAR/GPS system to evaluate compliance with mission assurance requirements. 2.
