Description

Task order no. NND09RR68T DC-8 airborne laboratory program this task order provides for the engineering and project support related to use of the NASA DC-8 aircraft. The DC-8 is one of several aircraft used in support of airborne science mission execution and various customers in flight demonstration of new technologies. The airborne science program supports airborne science instrumentation, which provides data that compliments spaceborne missions and allows sampling of the atmosphere. Traditionally airborne measurement systems have been integrated onto a particular aircraft, which then performed all of the required data collection flights. The airborne science program is responsible for maintaining the aircraft and sensor assets that support the earth science division within the NASA science mission directorate (SMD). The NASA DC-8 airborne laboratory program first arrived at the NASA dryden flight research center (DFRC) in 1997. The platform aircraft provides for a wide variety of experiments, collects data in support of scientific projects, and serves the world scientific community. Included in this community are NASA, federal, state, academic, and foreign investigators. In response to an unsolicited proposal, NASA entered into a cooperative agreement with the university of north dakota (UND) on june 2, 2005 to establish the national suborbital education and research center (NSERC) with the DC-8 flying laboratory as the centerpiece. The cooperative agreement with UND allows the university an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to generate new business expanding the missions and utilization of the aircraft. DFRC is responsible for technology development, aircraft operations, payload integration, range support, flight safety and ground safety for the DC-8. The DC-8 will be based at the dryden aircraft operations facility located adjacent to the U.S. Air force production flight test installation (plant 42) in palmdale, california, 70 miles northeast of downtown LOS angeles. This aircraft operations facility offers the expanded space needed to manage DFRC's airborne science missions and research platforms. This task order will be worked in conjunction with T.O. NND08RR61T.
