About this award

This federal contract award to Zin Technologies, Inc. (a self-certified small disadvantaged business) is for the development of the Liquid Crystal of Nanoplates (LCN) experiment to be conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) in fiscal year 2019. The LCN experiment will utilize existing hardware from the Observation Analysis of Smectic Islands in Space (OASIS) project, but will require a new sample container and potential modifications to the optics assembly and diagnostics. The contract, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center, has a ceiling value of $2,066,831.00 and is a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract. The contract is not set aside and is intended to further NASA's understanding of liquid crystal crystallization in microgravity environments prior to the LCN experiment's planned flight in fiscal year 2020.

Description

The liquid crystal of nanoplates (LCN) experiment is designed to use liquid crystal as a unique system to study the crystallization (also known as nano disks shaped structures) of colloidal system. NASA intends to utilize as much of the OASIS (observation analysis of smectic islands in space) hardware, such as the avionics assembly, digital i/o and power unit experiment to further experiments such as LCN and future liquid crystal experiments. However, a new sample container needs to be fabricated and possible modification to the optics assembly and diagnostics will be needed. To better understand the science of LCN prior to flying this experiment in fiscal year (FY) 2020, an LCN preliminary investigative experiment will be developed using nanoracks platform and nanolab modules on board the international space station (ISS) in FY 2019.
