Description

Recovery chic 164190 the chickasaw national recreation area (here after referred to as NRA) will contract the manual and mechanical treatment as described below of 142.1 acres of land within the NRA. The purpose of this project is to create and maintain a defensible space along the NRA boundary to aid in the suppression of fires entering or exiting the NRA and to protect existing structures and property within and adjacent to the NRA. This project will also reduce the encroachment of eastern red cedar and ASH juniper into those NRA areas which have historically been hardwood stands and mixed grass prairie. All project area boundary lines will be flagged and maps of the project area will be provided by the NRA personnel at the pre-work meeting. NRA personnel will burn the project area in the winter of 2011. The treatment to be performed under this project will be to create and/or expand an existing defensible space by thinning and removing of trees, vines, limbs, and brush within 30 feet of the NRA boundary to create the desired outcome of a 30 foot wide defensible space. All dead material standing (SNAGS) or on the ground in the defensible space will be cut and removed. No material will be felled, bucked, scattered, or limbed on the private properties adjacent to the boundary. All eastern red cedar and ASH juniper trees within the flagged (ORANGE) boundaries of the 30 foot defensible space will be cut down. Deciduous trees less than 6 inches DBH will be removed. All deciduous `leave trees (glossary #6) greater than 6 inches DBH within the 30 foot defensible space will be limbed to a height of 7 feet. Thinning (as defined in the glossary) interior to the defensible space of this project area will consist of cutting down eastern red cedar and ASH juniper trees, limbing, bucking, and scattering slash across the ground to a height of no more than 18 inches. Some trees will be left for screening. These `leave trees will be marked with blue and white stripped flagging by the NRA.
