About this award
This is a task order issued under the National Strategic Research Institute's (NSRI) contract with the U.S. Department of the Air Force. NSRI is a non-profit organization affiliated with the University of Nebraska that conducts research and development to support national defense priorities.
Under this $1,485,080.00 task order, NSRI will develop a lightweight vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial system (UAS) and sensor emplacement system. The goal is to enhance the range and capabilities of existing sensor emplacement platforms used to deploy and conceal ground sensors. This supports objectives around nuclear detection and forensics, including characterization of nuclear proliferation and terrorism activities, as well as the development of advanced radiation detection technologies. The final VTOL UAS and sensor system will be demonstrated and tested at a Department of Defense range facility. No set-aside designation was used for this award.
Description
B. The primary objective of this to is to develop a lightweight vtol UAS and sensor emplacement system that will have further range and increased capabilities as compared to the multi-rotor UAS developed in phases 1, 2, and 3. The sensor emplacement system developed can place and conceal an UGS at a specified location. The project shall technologically improve performance of existing sensor emplacement system platforms used to deliver and conceal ground sensors. IT will also refine the auger system developed in phases 1, 2, and 3. The goal of this project is to provide emplacement capability options for commanders and intelligence agencies to collect data on activities associated with WMD transportation and use. An existing commercial off the shelf/ government off the shelf (COTS/GOTS) systems (if available) shall be modified by NU/nsri. The final modified unit will be demonstrated and tested in a field environment at a DOD range facility with representative targets such as underground facilities, roadways, vehicles, and troop movements. Under this to, NU/nsri, usstratcom, and its uarc partners will provide the nation with research efforts centered on core competency: #1 nuclear detection and forensics, including detection and characterization of nuclear proliferation programs and nuclear terrorism activities; analysis of nuclear-related activities; development of novel and field-deployable interrogation sources to detect special nuclear materials; radiation detectors with improved sensitivity, noise characteristics, and operational capabilities; standoff detection of nuclear debris; rapid in situ forensic analysis of nuclear material; and in situ non-destructive testing of nuclear pits.
