The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Alaska District awarded a $399.4 million definitive contract to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. for Port of Nome Modification Phase 1A on August 28, 2025, under firm fixed-price terms with no set-aside.
The originating solicitation calls for extending the existing Nome Causeway by 1,200 feet with a layered aggregate and rock embankment protected by 18-ton armor stone, constructing a 30-foot wide road surface, and installing a 600-foot opencell sheet pile dock. The scope also includes removing a 250-foot spur breakwater and existing armor stone. This phase addresses West Causeway Extension as part of a multi-phase port modification plan designed to improve maritime infrastructure in the Arctic and support navigation for 60 regional communities. Environmental coordination involves NOAA, NMFS, USFWS, and ADEC, with requirements for marine mammal protection, water quality management, and essential fish habitat preservation. Place of performance is Nome, Alaska. The contract runs through September 5, 2029. The evaluation considered past performance, technical approach, project execution, small business participation, and price under a tradeoff process.
