About this award

This is a NASA SBIR Phase II contract awarded to Fibertek, Inc., a small business manufacturer specializing in advanced photonics and engineering services. Under this $2,581,999.00 contract, Fibertek will design, build, and test a hardened version of a single-frequency, end-pumped laser with an optical-to-optical efficiency of X%. The contractor will also perform breadboard amplifier tests to demonstrate energy scaling to "X" MJ/pulse and ultraviolet (UV) output to "X" W average power. This laser is being developed as an enabling technology for potential space-based lidar missions identified as priorities in the National Research Council Earth Science Decadal Survey. The laser module will undergo environmental and lifetime testing to validate the design's technology readiness level, based on requirements from NASA's CALIPSO and ICESat-2 programs. The contract has a total small business set-aside designation.

Description

Under this NASA sbir phase-II award, the contractor will be designing, building and testing a hardened version of a single-frequency, end pumped laser with an optical to optical efficiency of X%. Also, the contractor will perform breadboard amplifier tests that demonstrate energy scaling to "X" MJ/pulse and ultra-violet (UV) output to "X" W average power. The goddard space flight center's earth science technology office (ESTO) requires a UV laser with a lifetime in excess of 1 billion shots. This laser would be an enabling technology for a number of potential space-based lidar missions that have been identified as priorities in the NRC earth science decadal survey. The laser module shall undergo a series of environmental and lifetime tests to validate that the laser design is at a specific technology readiness level (TRL). The requirements for environmental tests shall be based on NASA's calipso and icesat-2 test requirements. Also, the principal investigator shall present the progress/results of this work at igarrs 2013, which is to be held in melbourne, australia in july of 2013.
