Description

Capitol college has established a SOI under the auspices of the national aeronautics and space administration (NASA) grant NAG5-12463 on august 15, 2002 which continued until august 14,2005. A new grant (NNG05GN95G) was issued on august 15,2005 to continue the SOI until september 30, 2010. A primary goal of the SOI is to develop a pipeline of personnel with the expertise to support NASA's space operations and engineering needs. The SOI is being implemented through a NASA cooperative agreement by developing partnerships with industry and carefully selecting engineering students including those enrolled in astronautical engineering (bsae). The bsae program has options in mission control management, computer software development, telecommunications, and image processing. Another important goal for the SOI is to develop in-house expertise and marketable capabilities so that we can continue this important program with less reliance upon NASA grants for funding and growth. The bsae degree combines the theoretical academic courses with practical hands-on experience, including mentorship by experienced FOT members and other systems engineering personnel with expertise in their field. Gsfc and our industry partners will provide the needed mentoring, training and certification of our students. Mentors are selected based on their expertise and experience in operating satellites, systems engineering, development project management, and systems administration. SOI personnel and college faculty are gaining experience in space operations, documenting processes and procedures and are assuming more technical and managerial responsibilities and leadership.
