About University For Development Studies

The University for Development Studies (UDS) is a public university in Ghana established in 1992 to blend academic study with community development. It provides constructive interaction between the academic and community spheres to foster total development in Northern Ghana.

Through subcontracts, UDS has provided services aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery systems and community health management committees in Northern Ghana. For instance, UDS worked as a subcontractor to University Research Co., LLC on a project to improve healthcare quality by building the capacity of community health committees to promote a culture of quality healthcare delivery.

UDS has received prime federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs under the Public Diplomacy Programs. These grants support institutional partnerships between UDS and U.S. universities like Appalachian State University. The projects facilitate faculty, administrative, and community exchanges through workshops focused on areas of collaborative strength, such as food security, livelihood change, conflict, and development. The grants aim to deepen these partnerships while furthering U.S. foreign policy goals and national interests. Additionally, UDS has received subgrants from entities like the University of Georgia Research Foundation to participate in projects like the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Peanut Research.
