About the company
Underwood Conservation District (UCD) helps landowners and land managers enhance and protect natural resources on a voluntary basis. It provides assistance in conservation planning, water and soil protection, wildlife habitat improvement, wildfire risk reduction, and natural resource education. UCD is a U.S. local government entity registered in SAM.gov to receive federal awards.
Under a $125,000 Cooperative Agreement from the Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 through the Partners for Fish and Wildlife program, UCD is restoring and enhancing approximately 2.5 acres of historical wetlands on agricultural land adjacent to a state-owned wildlife area managed for western pond turtles. Work includes excavating two deep-water ponds, reshaping an existing pond, planting 1,000 native stems to support pond function and turtle habitat, and conducting educational site visits. As a sub-recipient from The Recreation & Conservation Office, UCD is exploring acquisition options and developing a conservation strategy for up to 200 acres along 5 miles of the White Salmon River corridor to preserve spawning habitat after the removal of Condit Dam. Under another sub-award from Washington State, UCD is installing riparian plantings, livestock fencing, streambank protection, conducting water quality monitoring, and providing outreach in the White Salmon watershed to improve riparian areas and address agricultural impacts.
