About The Astronomical Society Of The Pacific

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) is an international non-profit scientific and educational organization founded in 1889 that works to increase understanding and appreciation of astronomy. ASP designs and delivers astronomy and space science educational programs and services to students and the public.

Through a $1,766,866 cooperative agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center, ASP, along with co-investigators at the SETI Institute and partners at the Space Science Institute, will implement the Eclipse Ambassadors program to prepare communities located outside the path of totality for two upcoming solar eclipses through 2025. There is no set-aside designation associated with this prime contract award to ready populations outside the eclipse zone for the celestial events through community science outreach.

Through a $250,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) STEM Education program, ASP will train approximately 200 K-9 science teachers and 100 astronomers as "Eclipse Ambassadors" to develop and distribute a solar eclipse kit and provide professional development around facilitating engagement in the 2024 total solar eclipse, with a focus on underrepresented groups in STEM. Ambassadors will have ongoing access to ASP's online learning portal to support continued professional learning.

Additionally, ASP received a $1,054,680 cooperative agreement from NASA to collaborate with the SETI Institute and Space Science Institute on the Eclipse Ambassadors program. This project aims to prepare communities outside the paths of the 2017 and 2026 solar eclipses by engaging the public on safe solar viewing and the scientific significance of total solar eclipses.
