About Kennewick Irrigation District

Kennewick Irrigation District (KID) is a Special Purpose District in Washington State that delivers irrigation and potable water to customers in the Tri Cities area. KID diverts water from the Yakima River at Prosser Dam and uses a canal system to distribute it.

Through federal grant awards, Kennewick Irrigation District has primarily carried out water infrastructure projects aimed at conserving water resources and improving efficiency. In September 2022, KID received a $6 million grant from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART program to line 36 miles of its main canal with polyethylene to reduce seepage and conserve over 1,100 acre-feet of water annually. As part of a settlement, nearly 400 acre-feet must remain in the Yakima River to aid fish populations. KID also obtained $160,111 in March 2022 from the same WaterSMART program to consolidate pump stations by installing new pipes, allowing centralized pumping for better water management per the District's 2013 plan. Additionally, in 2019 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded KID $3.5 million for lining other sections of its main canal system to curb water losses. These grants demonstrate KID's focus on water conservation efforts through infrastructure upgrades funded predominantly by the Interior Department.
