About Illinois Department Of Corrections
Illinois Department of Corrections is the state agency responsible for incarcerating individuals sentenced to prison terms by the courts. Through federal grants, IDOC provides services aimed at facilitating the successful reentry of justice-involved individuals.
IDOC has received federal formula grant funding from the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance to expand educational opportunities for incarcerated adults. Efforts include reducing waitlists for classes by adjusting staffing, creating digitized resources available on tablets, and identifying assessment tools and services for those with intellectual/developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, or learning disabilities. IDOC also partners as a subrecipient on federal grants related to public safety, transitional housing, treatment programs, and emergency preparedness. Recent subawards supported parole compliance initiatives, treatment for female offenders, COVID-19 protective equipment, and inmate work crews assisting with natural disaster response. Across awards, IDOC utilizes grant funding to both provide direct services to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated populations as well as collaborate with partners like law enforcement agencies, human service organizations, and emergency management entities.
