The San Juan Bay Estuary Program Division (SJBEP) is a division within CCSJBE dedicated to implementing the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.
Through numerous cooperative agreements and project grants from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2 under the National Estuary Program (CFDA 66.456), CCSJBE/SJBEP has carried out a wide range of activities aimed at improving water quality, protecting natural habitats, and promoting sustainable uses of the San Juan Bay Estuary. These activities include coordinating regional water quality monitoring networks, developing green infrastructure master plans, creating watershed-based hazard mitigation plans, implementing community engagement and citizen science initiatives, conducting economic valuation studies, and organizing awareness events like Puerto Rico Water Quality Day. CCSJBE/SJBEP has also received Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding to restore the Juan Méndez Creek through green/blue infrastructure interventions. The organization often partners with government agencies like the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources through sub-awards to execute specific projects related to monitoring, mitigation, reforestation, and infrastructure improvements within the estuary watershed.
