About Coquille Watershed Association
Coquille Watershed Association, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization based in Coquille, Oregon, serves as a prime federal grantee specializing in watershed restoration, aquatic habitat improvement, and environmental conservation projects throughout the Coquille River Basin and surrounding areas in Coos County. The organization has maintained active federal grant registration since September 2006 and currently holds prime cooperative agreement awards focused on ecosystem restoration, fish passage enhancement, and riparian habitat management across multiple stream systems in southwestern Oregon.
The organization has demonstrated extensive experience delivering watershed restoration services through cooperative agreements funded primarily by the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under the Aquatic Resources Management program and the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1. Recent prime grant awards include a $862,201 cooperative agreement from the BLM to replace a deteriorating culvert at Russell Creek that will restore fish passage for coho salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout, and Pacific lamprey while protecting 0.2 miles of stream habitat through installation and monitoring activities extending through September 2029. The organization's portfolio encompasses diverse restoration activities including large wood and boulder placement, removal of fish passage barriers such as concrete weirs and undersized culverts, riparian vegetation treatment and planting, floodplain connectivity restoration, tidegate replacement for fish passage improvement, and freshwater mussel surveys conducted in partnership with the Xerces Society. As a sub-grantee through the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB), Coquille Watershed Association has implemented complementary projects including the Woodward Creek Tributary Culvert, Dement Creek Road and Riparian Enhancement, Lower Steel Creek Restoration, Coaledo Tide Gate Replacement for Fish Passage Improvement, and various cultural surveys and engineering design phases. The organization collaborates extensively with multiple stakeholders including the Coquille Indian Tribe, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Coos County, and various landowners and drainage districts to implement holistic, whole-watershed restoration approaches addressing limiting factors affecting Oregon Coast Endangered Species Unit coho recovery and broader ecosystem health objectives.
