About Continental Divide Trail Coalition
Continental Divide Trail Coalition is a Colorado-based nonprofit organization registered to receive federal awards since March 2014. The organization partners with the Bureau of Land Management to support the management, administration, and stewardship of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, a 3,100-mile trail extending from the Canadian border in Montana to the Mexico border in New Mexico. Through its federal grant awards, Continental Divide Trail Coalition provides cooperative partnership services focused on trail completion, public access expansion, community engagement, and landscape stewardship activities that benefit both public recreation and local economies along the CDT corridor.
Continental Divide Trail Coalition has demonstrated substantial expertise in trail development and community engagement through five cooperative agreements with the Bureau of Land Management. The organization's services include trail planning and completion efforts, coordination of volunteer projects and conservation corps partnerships, installation and maintenance of trail infrastructure such as gates, signs, trail tread, and informational kiosks, and survey and monitoring activities to assess trail conditions and landscape needs. The organization conducts extensive community outreach and development initiatives through hosting community events and media campaigns designed to promote community resilience, economic development, and ecological integrity in CDT gateway communities. Recent work has addressed critical safety concerns, such as a reroute project in Colorado's Kremmling Field Office to eliminate hazardous highway walking sections. The organization's most recent award, a five-year cooperative agreement issued in September 2025, provides up to $70,000 annually through the National Office to support trail completion and information services. Prior cooperative agreements from the New Mexico Region (2021-2025) focused on specific regional trail improvements, community outreach, and local economic support through the sourcing of supplies and services from local businesses, while engaging tribal nations, school children, and local health organizations in CDT-based stewardship and access initiatives.
