About Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority
Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority, operating as Sound Transit, is a regional public transportation agency serving the greater Seattle metropolitan area across King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties in Washington. As a local government transit authority and inter-municipal entity registered in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov) since February 2005, Sound Transit receives federal funding through grant awards to develop, maintain, and expand its multi-modal transit infrastructure and services. The agency provides comprehensive public transportation services including bus rapid transit, light rail, commuter rail, and streetcar systems, serving the general public and transit-dependent populations throughout its service area.
Through federal grant awards, Sound Transit has executed a diverse portfolio of capital and operating projects funded primarily by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and supplemented by grants from the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The agency's capital projects encompass light rail extensions including the Lynnwood Link Extension, Federal Way Link Extension, Downtown Redmond Link Extension, Tacoma Dome Link Extension, West Seattle Link Extension, Ballard Link Extension, and the Everett Link Extension, as well as bus rapid transit corridors along I-405, SR 522, and other regional corridors. Sound Transit has also undertaken preventive maintenance programs for its rolling stock across bus, light rail, and commuter rail systems; safety and security enhancements at transit facilities and at-grade crossings; operations and maintenance facility construction; passenger information systems upgrades; and the procurement of battery electric buses and related charging infrastructure. Funded through formula grants under CFDA 20.507 (Federal Transit Formula Grants), CFDA 20.525 (State of Good Repair Grants), CFDA 20.526 (Buses and Bus Facilities Programs), CFDA 20.534 (Community Project Funding Congressionally Directed Spending), and discretionary grants, Sound Transit has directly implemented all funded activities without utilizing subrecipients, maintaining full operational control over the design, construction, and procurement activities that advance regional transit connectivity and service reliability.
