About this program
The Corporation for National and Community Service funds volunteer mobilization and service projects that honor those lost on September 11, 2001, and address community needs through its AmeriCorps September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance program (94.012), with the most recent award obligating $4 million on May 8, 2026.
The program funds time-bound service projects organized around September 11th each year. Recent awards demonstrate scope spanning volunteer recruitment and deployment (MyGoodDeed mobilized 20,000 volunteers packing meals across 10 projects), youth-led community service (Global Youth Justice engaging 8,700 student volunteers in service projects across multiple states), disaster preparedness and emergency response training (United Way Worldwide creating emergency preparedness kits at 10-plus sites across eight CNCS regions, The Arc of the United States training volunteers in disaster planning and community resilience across selected cities), and intergenerational service such as visiting isolated older adults and providing support to veterans and military families through home revitalization efforts. Educational components include developing and distributing curriculum materials for K-12 classroom integration and training volunteers to commit to sustained service beyond the anniversary date.
The program distributes exclusively Project Grants totaling $27.4 million in combined federal obligation across 38 awards since 2017. The Corporation for National and Community Service Office of Grants Management operates the program as a single funding source. Recent award volume declined in 2026 to one award; prior years averaged higher frequency, with 2023 yielding 13 awards and 2019 producing 11 awards. Recipients require no regulatory match; all awards note zero percent matching requirements.
Representative awards include the May 2026 project obligating $4 million for the 2026–2027 program year, a $4.603 million October 2023 award to implement cooperative-agreement-structured programming with AmeriCorps staff substantial involvement, and a $999,980 award also obligated in October 2023 supporting 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 service years. Individual award magnitudes range from $200 thousand to approximately $4.6 million.
No open grant opportunities are currently posted for this program. The most recent solicitation (AC-03-17-23, FY 2023 Days of Service) closed May 16, 2023, and accepted applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal governments, and public and private higher education institutions for projects serving disaster relief, education, food and nutrition, health, housing, and related categories.
