About this program

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) through Assistance Listing 93.AR6 funds investigator-initiated and solicited research projects into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis, musculoskeletal, and skin diseases at institutions throughout the U.S. and internationally, with no specific recent award date surfaced in the source.

The program accepts both unsolicited applications and applications in response to published funding opportunities (Requests for Applications and Program Announcements). Peer review occurs through the NIH Center for Scientific Review, which assigns impact scores; applications then undergo second-level review by the NIAMS National Advisory Council before the Institute Director makes final funding decisions based on peer review results, Council recommendations, program priorities, and fund availability. The source does not report recent grant awards, assistance-type distribution, funding concentration, award magnitudes, or current open opportunities, making it impossible to assess current activity level, typical award size, or near-term submission windows. The source does indicate that NIAMS funds research projects broadly across arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin disease research domains, with grantees required to retain financial and programmatic records for three years from the date of annual Federal Financial Report submission. Organizations pursuing this program would need to consult the NIAMS website and NIH grants portal directly for current solicitations, recent award trends, and typical funding levels to make a practical pursuit decision.

Objective and description

Objective

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) mission is to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases; training of basic and clinical scientists

Description

The NIAMS funds research projects at institutions throughout the U.S. and around the world. We accept investigator-initiated applications, as well as accept applications for research grants and contracts in response to a published funding opportunity-Request for Applications (RFA) or Program Announcements (PA) to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases.

How to apply

Award procedure

Applications are evaluated for scientific and technical merit by peer review panels convened either by the NIH Center for Scientific Review, resulting in written critiques and an overall impact score. Applications then undergo second-level review by the NIAMS National Advisory Council, which advises on scientific quality, relevance to the NIAMS mission, portfolio balance, and public health priorities. Following Council review, final approval authority rests with the NIAMS Institute Director, who makes funding decisions based on peer review results, Council and Institute staff recommendations, program priorities, and the availability of appropriated funds. Once an application is selected for funding, NIAMS staff coordinate with the applicant to complete Just-in-Time requirements, including verification of human subjects, animal use, and other regulatory assurances as applicable. NIAMS Grants Management Officers then review the application for administrative, financial, and policy compliance and are responsible for issuing the Notice of Award (NoA).

Appeals

From 30 to 60 days. A principal investigator may question the substantive or procedural aspects of the review of his/her application by communicating with the staff of the Institute. A description of the NIH Peer Review Appeal procedures is available on the NIH home page at grants.nih.gov.
