About this program
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) within the National Institutes of Health funds research projects investigating the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis, musculoskeletal, and skin diseases under CFDA 93.AR1, with no specific open opportunity deadline evident in current materials.
NIAMS accepts both investigator-initiated applications and applications in response to published funding opportunities (Requests for Applications and Program Announcements). Research grants support salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and other direct costs associated with scientific investigation aligned with program objectives. Eligible applicants include public and private institutions—nonprofit and for-profit alike—located throughout the United States and internationally. All applications undergo two-stage review: initial scientific and technical merit evaluation by NIH peer review panels, followed by secondary review by the NIAMS National Advisory Council, which assesses scientific quality, mission relevance, portfolio balance, and public health priorities. The NIAMS Institute Director makes final funding decisions based on peer review results, Council recommendations, program priorities, and available appropriations.
The source does not provide recent grant award data, portfolio concentration figures, typical award magnitudes, or descriptions of specific recent awards, preventing characterization of current funding volume, assistance-type distribution, or representative award ranges. The source does not identify recently posted grant opportunities with application deadlines or describe current solicitation priorities.
Grantees must retain financial, programmatic, and statistical records for three years from the date of annual Federal Financial Report submission, with extended retention required if audits or litigation are active during that period. Federal oversight agencies, including the HHS Inspector General and the U.S. Comptroller General, retain audit and access rights to recipient records pertaining to awards without time limitation.

Eligibility
- Applicant eligibility
Research Grants: public and private institutions, both nonprofit and for-profit, who propose to establish, expand, and improve research activities in health sciences and related fields.
- Uses of assistance
Research Grants provide funds for salaries, equipment, supplies, travel, and other expenses associated with scientific investigation relevant to program objectives.
How to apply
- Award procedure
Applications are evaluated for scientific and technical merit by peer review panels convened either by the NIH Center for Scientific Review, resulting in written critiques and an overall impact score. Applications then undergo second-level review by the NIAMS National Advisory Council, which advises on scientific quality, relevance to the NIAMS mission, portfolio balance, and public health priorities. Following Council review, final approval authority rests with the NIAMS Institute Director, who makes funding decisions based on peer review results, Council and Institute staff recommendations, program priorities, and the availability of appropriated funds. Once an application is selected for funding, NIAMS staff coordinate with the applicant to complete Just-in-Time requirements, including verification of human subjects, animal use, and other regulatory assurances as applicable. NIAMS Grants Management Officers then review the application for administrative, financial, and policy compliance and are responsible for issuing the Notice of Award (NoA).
- Appeals
A principal investigator may question the substantive or procedural aspects of the review of his/her application by communicating with the staff of the Institute. A description of the NIH Peer Review Appeal procedures is available on the NIH home page at grants.nih.gov.
