About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services distributed 106 Formula Grants totaling $10 million under Assistance Listing 93.720 to fund state ambulatory surgical center (ASC) healthcare-associated infection prevention initiatives, with the most recent award issued July 1, 2010.

This program has been inactive for over 16 years. The funding supported state agency efforts to enhance inspection capability and frequency for onsite surveys of ambulatory surgical centers nationwide through deployment of infection control survey tools developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and CMS, adoption of CMS tracer methodology, and use of multi-person survey teams for ASCs above specified size or complexity thresholds. All 106 awards were distributed to state health agencies as Formula Grants during 2009 and 2010, with 55 awards in 2009 and 51 in 2010.

CMS was the sole funding source for the program's entire $10 million portfolio. Award magnitudes varied substantially by state, ranging from roughly $8,000 to $1.26 million. Representative recent awards included California ($1.26 million, October 1, 2009), Pennsylvania ($336 thousand, October 1, 2009), Washington ($695 thousand, October 1, 2009), and Maryland ($570 thousand, October 1, 2009). Smaller allocations such as those to New Hampshire, Iowa, and multiple other states fell in the $8,000 to $25,000 range. All awards completed by September 30, 2010, except for New Hampshire's award, which extended to September 30, 2019.

No grant opportunities are currently open under this Assistance Listing. With no awards disbursed since July 2010, this program is not active and not recommended for pursuit.
