About this program
The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration administered the Affordable Care Act State Health Care Workforce Development Grants program (CFDA 93.509), with the most recent grant awards issued on September 30, 2010. This program is not currently active for new applications.
The program funded state-level health care workforce development initiatives, including the creation of statewide health care workforce plans, identification of professional shortage areas, and development of uniform data collection systems across states to establish baseline supply metrics for licensed health professionals. Awards supported coordination across the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and Education to increase the supply of health care providers and address workforce shortages.
All 26 grants awarded under this program were Project Grants. The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration was the sole funding agency, obligating $5.2 million in federal dollars across the portfolio. Award magnitudes ranged from $85 thousand to $1.87 million, with most individual grants in the $140 thousand to $150 thousand range. Project Grant T55HP20285 received the largest award at $1.87 million with a completion date of September 29, 2014; most other grants had one-year performance periods concluding in 2011 or early 2012.
No recent grant opportunities are currently posted under this Assistance Listing. The entire documented award cohort dates to a single issuance on September 30, 2010, with no subsequent funding activity recorded. The program appears to have been a time-limited ACA authorization that concluded its implementation phase over a decade ago.
Objective and description
- Objective
The primary focus of this program is to address health workforce shortages within each state and nationally. Of secondary importance but essential in order to develop viable statewide plans and identify key shortage areas, is the need to support the development of uniform data collection across states on licensed health professionals. This uniform data collection will be used to develop baseline numbers on the current supply of the health care workforce in order to evaluate the impact and success of this program. Efforts to develop and implement state health care workforce plans across state and federal organizations (including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and Education) should result in increases in the number of health care providers available to address the nation's health care needs.
