About this program
The Department of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education funds arts education in pre-K through grade 12 schools through the Arts in Education program (CFDA 84.351), with most recent grant awards disbursed in October 2025.
The program supports music, dance, theater, media arts, and visual arts instruction for students, including disadvantaged students and students with disabilities, through three primary activity streams: professional development for arts educators and principals; development and dissemination of accessible instructional materials and online arts-based educational programming; and community and national outreach activities that build partnerships among schools, LEAs, museums, cultural institutions, and arts centers. Project periods run up to four years, with continuation awards subject to available appropriations and demonstrated progress. Eligible applicants include LEAs and LEA consortia, state educational agencies, institutions of higher education, museums and cultural institutions, the Bureau of Indian Education, eligible national nonprofit organizations, and other public or private entities.
Awards are entirely Project Grants, with 442 total awards since 2001 and $667.6 million in combined federal obligations. Funding concentrates heavily in the Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement (265 awards, $396.5 million), with the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education accounting for 171 awards and $246 million. The remaining six Department of Education awards total $25.2 million. Award activity has been uneven in recent years: 20 awards in 2017, 24 in 2018, 18 in 2021, only 2 in 2022, and 4 in 2025 through October. Recipients include regional consortia, school districts, museums, and national nonprofits. Recent awards fund arts integration initiatives spanning STEM education, literacy, culturally responsive teaching, rural access, and special education populations. The Kennedy Center National Arts Education Program received $32 million for a four-year period (2022–2026); individual awards in 2025 ranged from approximately $4 million to $4.4 million.
