About this program
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Office of Research Financial Assistance Program (CFDA 77.009) has made its most recent grant award on September 19, 2024, funding a Gilbert W. Beebe Symposium on AI and ML applications in radiation therapy, medical diagnostics, and radiation occupational health and safety for the National Academy of Sciences, though no new solicitations have been posted since June 2023.
The program supports research and coordination activities addressing radiation control, probabilistic risk assessment standards development, and disposition of orphan and unwanted radioactive materials. Recent awards have funded work on severe accident management guidelines, reactor fuel analysis, two-phase flow experiments, radiation protection guidance, concrete aging prediction in nuclear plants, and state-federal collaboration on radiation control programs. Award amounts range widely, from $5,000 to $2.16 million, with typical research grants falling in the $200,000 to $875,000 range.
The portfolio contains 57 total awards spanning from 2007 to 2024, with an average cadence of roughly one award per year in recent years—one award each in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Combined federal dollars obligated total $15.9 million, with recipients contributing $1.1 million in non-federal cost-share. The program is dominated by Project Grants (50 awards, 88 percent), supplemented by four Cooperative Agreements (7 percent) and three Block Grants (5 percent). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Central Office and the broader NRC organization together account for all funding activity; the Central Office obligated $9.5 million across 22 awards while the parent NRC obligated $6.5 million across 35 awards.
The most recent posted opportunities closed in 2023: a Radioactive Material Disposition Cooperative Agreement (due June 5, 2023) and a Coordinating Federal and State Radiation Protection Programs Cooperative Agreement (due April 21, 2022). The program description notes two existing cooperative agreements remain active as of the source date, subject to periodic reviews and potential termination if they no longer effectuate program goals. Future NOFOs will be posted on Grants.gov. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribes, and quasi-public nonprofit organizations. Project periods do not exceed five years.
