About this program

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funds workforce development and professional training initiatives for museum professionals through the 21st Century Museum Professional Program (CFDA 45.032), with the most recent grant awards made on September 1, 2026, and an open solicitation (21MP-FY27) due November 13, 2026.

The program supports projects that build career pathways, strengthen professional networks, and identify effective workforce education and training practices in the museum field. Recent awards demonstrate funding for micro-credential workshops in collections management, digital asset management, and community engagement; paid internship and apprenticeship programs at zoos, natural history museums, and regional cultural institutions; graduate assistant positions and certificate programs in specialized museum practice; and professional development for museum staff in leadership, AI governance, early childhood STEM programming, collections care, and strategic planning. Recipients have included state museum associations, university-based museum studies programs, regional museum consortia, specialized museums, and museum-serving nonprofits. Awards funded internships reaching 40 to 96 participants, fellowship cohorts of 20 to 30 professionals, and training for 60 to 250 museum staff and volunteers, with typical project periods of two to three years.

IMLS is the sole funding agency for this program. Since August 2024, the program has issued 24 Project Grants totaling $7.5 million in federal dollars obligated, with recipients contributing an additional $9.4 million in non-federal match. Awards average approximately $312,500 in federal funding and have been issued at a steady pace of eight per year. Recent awards range from $200,000 (professional development in AI governance) to $1.24 million (vertically integrated workforce pipeline combining high school volunteer engagement, undergraduate internships, and post-baccalaureate residencies). Eligible applicants include units of state, local, or tribal government; private nonprofits; museums; museum associations and service organizations; and institutions of higher education, all located in the United States or U.S. territories and freely associated states. The 21MP-FY27 opportunity posted September 1, 2026, with applications due November 13, 2026. IMLS anticipates notifying applicants of funding decisions by August 2026 (note: this date appears inconsistent with the current date of October 17, 2026, suggesting final notifications may have already been issued). Projects typically begin July 1 and run one to three years.

Successful applications in this grant program will reflect a thorough understanding of current practice related to training museum professionals; employ inclusive outreach strategies to reach target audiences at multiple institutions; engage museum staff, leadership, and volunteers at any stage of career development; follow a set of logical, interrelated activities tied directly to addressing a key need or challenge; and generate measurable results.

Award procedure

Peer reviewers are experts in the field with relevant knowledge and expertise in the types of project activities identified in the applications. IMLS instructs reviewers to evaluate applications according to the review criteria outlined in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. Peer reviewers must comply with Federal ethics and conflicts of interest requirements. The IMLS Director takes into account the input provided by the review process and makes final funding decisions consistent with the purposes of the agency's mission and programs.

Time to approval or disapproval

Renewals

IMLS may extend particular grants at the discretion of the Director. Awardees may request no-cost extensions of up to a year.

Appeals
