About this program

The Department of Justice Civil Rights Division has not awarded grants under this program since October 1, 2010, more than 15 years ago (Assistance Listing 16.110). This program funds public education and outreach campaigns that teach employers, workers, and service providers about their rights and responsibilities under the Immigration and Nationality Act's antidiscrimination provisions, which prohibit employment discrimination based on citizenship status and national origin, and unfair documentary practices in employment verification.

The program distributed $4.3 million in federal funding across 80 Project Grants over its active lifetime dating to 1991. Award volume grew substantially in the 2000s, peaking at 13 awards in 2010. Typical individual awards ranged from $40,000 to $109,105. Representative 2010 awards included a public education program for immigrant workers, employers, and human service providers ($109,105); an anti-discrimination education campaign addressing immigration-related unfair employment discrimination ($59,000); and an outreach and education initiative by La Raza Centro Legal ($55,419). Earlier awards, such as 2008 grants, supported similar programming: the Asian Pacific American Anti-Discrimination Education Project ($59,000), a Palm Beach immigrant employment education program ($55,000), and employment authorization and IRCA compliance training for employers ($54,000 to $75,000).

Funding was wholly concentrated within the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, which provided all 80 awards. All awards were Project Grants structured as approximately one-year initiatives, with completion dates typically 12 to 24 months after the award date.

No grant opportunities have been posted recently under this Assistance Listing. The absence of awards since October 2010 and no current solicitation activity suggest this program is no longer active.
