About this program
The Department of the Interior National Park Service funds youth and veteran internships and conservation service projects on federal lands through Assistance Listing 15.931, with the most recent award issued on May 1, 2026 (CFDA 15.931).
The program places young adults ages 18–30 and veterans up to age 35 with qualified nonprofit organizations to conduct hands-on natural and cultural resource conservation, education, and volunteer service on Department of the Interior lands. Recent awards fund internships in trail maintenance and restoration, invasive species management, visitor interpretation and education, historical preservation and museum work, and resource monitoring across national parks and monuments nationwide. Representative projects include placing six youth interns at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve to provide visitor services and interpretation ($87,649); supporting one intern at Acadia National Park for informal interpretation and visitor center staffing ($33,984); funding a 16-week ecological restoration internship at Acadia focusing on invasive species removal ($25,988); and deploying a five-person crew at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for invasive species management and soil restoration ($19,405).
The program is active and sustained. The portfolio spans 7,796 total awards from 2005 through May 2026, with annual awards in recent years ranging from 334 (2025) to 444 (2022). The most recent awards cluster in early 2026, indicating ongoing funding cycles. Combined federal dollars obligated total $562.6 million, with non-federal cost-share adding $191.6 million.
Cooperative Agreements account for 90 percent of awards (7,035), with Project Grants making up the remaining 10 percent (758). Funding is heavily concentrated within the National Park Service: the NPS National Office led on $166.5 million across 918 awards; the broader NPS entity issued $127.6 million across 4,121 awards; and the Pacific West Region, Intermountain Region, and Northeast Region together account for $178.4 million. Nine distinct federal agencies fund under this listing. Typical individual award amounts range from $20 thousand to $180 thousand, though megaawards exist—one Traditional Trades Advancement Program award for historic preservation across multiple sites reached $1,333,333.
One major opportunity remains open: P24AS00064 (21st Century Conservation Service Corps & Civilian Climate Corps Program – National Youth Cooperative Agreements), posted September 27, 2023, with a due date of September 30, 2028. The solicitation targets county governments, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, special districts, state governments, tribal entities, municipalities, and higher education institutions; it funds cooperative agreements for youth and veteran development aligned with conservation and climate corps objectives. Older posted opportunities from 2019–2022 show a pattern of single-source awards and notices of intent rather than open competition, suggesting many projects flow through master cooperative agreements with established service corps organizations such as American Conservation Experience, Conservation Legacy, and Student Conservation Association.
