About this program
The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service funds conservation programs for Asian elephants across their range through CFDA 15.621, with the most recent grant award disbursed on January 1, 2025.
The program has distributed 331 awards totaling $29.7 million in combined federal funding over approximately 24 years. Recent award cadence shows variability—15 awards in 2019, 22 in 2021, 4 in 2022, 15 in 2024, and 1 in 2025. Grant awards are exclusively Project Grants (100 percent of the portfolio), with one Cooperative Agreement representing negligible share. The program is split between two primary funding entities: Fish and Wildlife Service Region 9 Headquarters led by federal dollar volume at $17 million across 88 awards, while the broader Fish and Wildlife Service agency distributed $11.8 million across 225 awards. The Department of the Interior proper accounts for $945 thousand across 18 awards. Combined federal and non-federal obligations total $67.5 million, indicating recipient cost-sharing of $37.8 million.
Funded projects address human-elephant conflict mitigation, habitat protection and restoration, wildlife law enforcement and anti-poaching activities, veterinary capacity building, population monitoring using GPS collars and genetic analysis, community-based conservation programs, and educational outreach. Representative recent awards include $1.413 million for strengthened SMART patrols and human-elephant conflict reduction at three Thai World Heritage sites through June 2027; $1.079 million for behavior-change education and portable electric crop fencing across Asia through June 2027; $651 thousand for alternative crop evaluation as a market-driven solution to reduce human-elephant conflict through July 2027; and $519 thousand for veterinary education and wildlife ambulance services at Syiah Kuala University in Sumatra through September 2028.
