About this program
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation funds recreational fishing events and educational activities for disabled and disadvantaged children at Bureau-managed reservoirs and public waters under the FISH-ABLE Fun with Reclamation program (CFDA 15.550), with the most recent grant award issued April 11, 2023.
This program has awarded seven grants totaling $471 thousand in federal dollars over the past 13 years, with one award disbursed in each of 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The funding mix is split between Project Grants (57 percent, four awards) and Cooperative Agreements (43 percent, three awards). Recent grants have funded multi-year fishing events emphasizing children ages 5–18, with recipients including Great Falls Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs, Inc., which received $8,323 to conduct fishing events at Tiber Dam (Lake Elwell) in Montana from 2022–2027, and The Mayfly Project, which received $28,125 to operate fishing programs at Bend, Oregon and Idaho Falls, Idaho lakes over the same period. Combined federal and non-federal dollars obligated across all seven awards totaled $590 thousand, indicating non-federal cost-share of approximately $119 thousand.
The Bureau of Reclamation is the sole funding source under this program. Award sizes cluster below $30 thousand in recent years, though one 2015 Cooperative Agreement obligated $312,464. Projects are generally renewable annually for up to five years, with continuation subject to Congressional appropriation.
