About this program
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation funds environmental restoration projects in the Lake Tahoe basin under CFDA 15.543, with the most recent grant award issued on June 14, 2019, over seven years ago. The program supports planning and implementation of wetlands and stream restoration projects aligned with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's Environmental Improvement Program, targeting water quality, soil conservation, wildlife, fisheries, and vegetation thresholds. Eligible activities include project planning and implementation, program coordination and management, surveys, monitoring, and public outreach.
The program has issued nine Project Grants totaling $1.8 million in federal dollars obligated since 2008, with funding concentrated in three major cohorts: three awards in 2010, two in 2016, and one each in 2013, 2017, and 2019. Award cadence has slowed substantially in recent years, and no grant opportunities have been posted since May 2019. The Bureau of Reclamation is the sole funding source for the program.
Recent awards demonstrate the program's focus on riparian and meadow restoration. Award R19AP00052 funded $860 thousand for feasibility studies, conceptual design, and environmental documentation for Upper Truckee River middle reaches restoration and floodplain management. Award R17AP00017 provided $292 thousand for Upper Truckee River restoration at Tahoe Pines Campgrounds. Award R16AP00221 funded $286 thousand for continuation of Rosewood Creek restoration, including post-construction water quality monitoring and biostabilization work.
Applicants include state and local agencies, federally recognized Indian Tribal governments, public and private nonprofit institutions, small businesses, and profit organizations. The Bureau of Reclamation screens proposals for eligibility and regional priority alignment, then forwards qualified applications for expert review against federal compliance standards and relevance to program objectives. Award selection is determined by the Commissioner or regional officials. Environmental compliance, including NEPA review, may be required depending on project scope. The Bureau typically completes review and selection within 12 months of proposal submission.
