About this program

The Department of the Interior National Park Service operates the Keweenaw National Historical Park Preservation Grants program (CFDA 15.407), which provides funding to preserve, interpret, and share the story of copper mining on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, with the most recent grant award made on August 17, 2022.

The program is not open to general solicitation; 15.407 is not a grant program for which proposals are solicited. The source material reflects no recent grant opportunities posted after 2018. Award activity has been sparse and irregular: nine grants awarded between 2013 and 2022, with award frequency dropping to zero in 2023–2026. The most recent opportunity on record (NPS-NOIP18AP00009, due April 9, 2018) was not a competitive solicitation but rather a notice of intent to award to the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission.

Funding has concentrated heavily among two National Park Service entities. The Department of the Interior National Park Service Midwest Region has issued five awards totaling $1.9 million in federal dollars, while the Department of the Interior National Park Service has issued four awards totaling $794 thousand. The program has obligated $2.7 million in combined federal dollars across its lifetime, with no non-federal matching requirement reported.

The assistance-type mix is predominantly Project Grants (78 percent of awards) with smaller Cooperative Agreements (22 percent). Recent awards range widely in magnitude. The largest recent award was $876,475 for general support to the Advisory Commission (August 2022). Other recent examples include $129,661 for restoration and preservation of the Quincy Mining Company 1918 Hoist House (June 2021) and a nominal $15,928 grant to support the Village of Calumet Historic District Ordinance administration (July 2022). Smaller awards have supported specific preservation activities such as $35,714 for a photovoltaic solar power system at Quincy Mine (2015) and $11,500 for bat habitat preservation at Adventure Mine No. 1 Shaft (2016).

Eligible recipients include the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission, local or regional units of government, public nonprofit institutions, academic institutions, and federally recognized Indian tribes. Assistance is typically project-specific and completed within months, though complexity may extend timelines. Given the absence of recent solicitations and the program's non-competitive structure restricted to designated beneficiaries, this program is not a practical target for unsolicited applicants seeking preservation funding on the Keweenaw Peninsula.
